Rain helps ease drought in NC mountains

Heavy rain has helped ease the drought gripping North Carolina's mountain region with some areas getting more than three inches of precipitation.
Forecasters with the National Weather Service said 2.4 inches fell in Hendersonville and nearby areas Thursday. The weather service said 1.16 inches was recorded in Asheville and 1.7 inches was recorded in Charlotte.
Eleven counties in southwestern North Carolina are listed in exceptional drought by the North Carolina Drought Management Council. Three mountain counties are in extreme drought and eight others are in severe drought. The report was last updated Tuesday.
Meteorologist Terry Benthall said the two days of rain were beneficial. He said some areas received as much as 4 inches in the two-day storm.
