North Carolina Municipal League: Public pensions, private pay

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Employees at a N.C. League of Municipalities are authorised for open pensions, but a organization doesn't consider its salaries should be released. Municipal League Executive Director Ellis Hankins told a News & Observer of Raleigh that given a organization is not a governmental agency, it is not subject to open records laws. N.C. Coalition for Lobbying and Government Reform Director Jane Pinsky disagrees. She says it is not fair to ask taxpayers to help pay for pensions, then exclude to open your books to those same people. The Municipal League isn't a only organization with a open pension perk. The N.C. Association of County Commissioners and police officers with a Eastern Band of a Cherokee Indians are also authorised and a N.C. Sheriffs' Association wants to join a system.
